Facts about living on the Sunshine Coast for your interstate move

Interstate migration to Queensland is booming, but most new residents bypass Brisbane for other regions in the Sunshine State.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the population estimate for Sunshine Coast is currently 367,180. The data of the last eight years of the Sunshine Coast’s population suggest the growth rate is very consistent and strong, ranging from 1.21 per cent to 2.24 per cent, adding around 4,198 to 7,240 people each year to the overall population. According to real estate experts, the actual figures could be higher however, the most accurate statistics won’t come out till the Census on August 10 this year.

It’s no secret why people are moving to the Sunshine Coast – it has some of Australia’s best beaches, an abundance of healthy recreational options, great restaurants, cafes and shopping spots, and a lifestyle with warm weather all year round.

Population of Sunshine Coast

With a population of over 350,000 and growing fast, the city is the 3rd most populous place in Queensland by population after Brisbane and Gold Coast. It is also the 9th most populous city in Australia. Researchers predict the population will reach close to 373,279 by the end of June 2021, but real estate experts predict an even higher rate.

Demographics of Sunshine Coast

According to the census, 48.3 per cent of Sunshine Coast people are male, while 51.7 per cent are female. The average age in Sunshine Coast is 44, and the top countries of birth are:

  • Australia 73.7%
  • England 6.2%
  • New Zealand 4.5%
  • South Africa 1.0%
  • Germany 0.7%
  • Scotland 0.6%.

The other top languages spoken are English 89.1%, German 0.6%, French 0.3%, Italian 0.3%, Afrikaans 0.3% and Dutch 0.3%.

The religious groups in Sunshine Coast consist of:

  • No Religion 34.0%
  • Catholic 18.2%
  • Anglican 16.8%
  • Not stated 9.1%
  • Uniting Church, 5.2%

The main occupations of people living in the Sunshine Coast are:

  • Professionals 19.1%
  • Technicians and Trades Workers 16.1%
  • Clerical and Administrative Workers 12.7%
  • Community and Personal Service Workers 12.2%
  • Managers 11.9%.

  • The Sunshine Coast gained local standing in 1960 when the Nambour Chamber of Commerce agreed with the Real Estate Institute of Queensland that ‘Sunshine Coast’ better represented the area than the name ‘Near North Coast’.
  • Mount Coolum is the world’s second-largest rock behind the famous Uluru.
  • SLSQ compiles a list of the best beaches in Queensland each year based on safety, facilities and services, and Sunshine Coast has Kings Beach, and Mooloolaba has made the top 10 this year.

  • Sunshine Coasters smoke less than other states, with 11.8 per cent (33,000) people who smoked daily compared with 14.4% of the population in other states.
