Expert Moving Tips From A Removalist

An article about moving is worth reading when it helps make the process easier for you. We want this compilation of Top Tips to be a moving story you can really take on-board.

Caloundra Removals & Storage is a removalist – Sunshine Coast based but not limited by state borders. We’ve moved people to houses down the road, as well as to more distant locations interstate.

We’ve seen the disarray, the angst, the fear. We’ve also seen slick moves worthy of Torvill and Dean.

1. Out Is the new In

Mindlessly packing everything is fine if you have few possessions. Otherwise, use this opportunity to lose excess weight. Be merciless instead of mindless. Purge what you don’t need. You’ll pack less, move less and unpack less. What’s not to like?

2. Create a Moving Folder

Keep all useful info relevant to your move (agreements, payments, and more) in a folder—preferably a physical one that doesn’t rely on batteries and internet connections. This way you’ll have the answer at hand, come hell or high water.

3. Get a head-start

Generally, you’ll know in advance about your upcoming move. Take a leisurely start by packing off-season clothes and items you won’t miss. When the time comes to pack everything else, you’ll have already made a big dent in your workload.

4. Survival Kit

Pack a bag of essentials—change of clothes, toothbrush, medications, must-have kids toys, your ‘moving folder’ (Item 2 above). This bag goes with you. If things go pear-shaped for any reason, at least you’ll have your essentials with you.

5. Plan A

Get in early with your new destination arrangements. Be smart scheduling utility providers, cleaners, painters, etc. Leave it too late and you run the risk of service unavailability, such as arriving to find your new home is without power, or being charged higher prices to meet your now-urgent needs.

6. Box smart

Heavier items, such as books, go in the smaller boxes. Lighter items, such as linens and loose clothing, go in the bigger boxes. Load boxes, heavier items first, with lighter items on top. Don’t leave empty spaces in the boxes. Fill gaps with clothing, towels, or packing paper. This makes carrying them easier and also results in less incidence of smashed contents.

Tape top and bottom seams. To cover the box’s stress points where appropriate, you could also tape all the way around the top and bottom edges. Label each box. Write a brief a description of the contents along with the room it’s destined for. Your removalist will then unload to the right rooms and your unpacking will be much easier. By numbering each box and making a list in a notebook, you’ll have a good record of what is where.

7. Breakables

Wrap your dishes in packing paper, then bundle 5 or 6 together, wrapped in more paper. Do not pack dishes flat. Pack them on their sides, cushioned by scrunched-up paper. Place cups and bowls inside one another, with paper in between, wrapped 3 or 4 in a bundle.

Plasma TVs require special handling. Laying them flat can damage them. If you don’t have the original box, place the box containing your TV into a second box that you’ve padded with packing paper.
