12 Challenges of Interstate Removals and How to Overcome Them

Interstate removals in Australia can be both exciting and overwhelming. Whether you’re moving from Queensland to Victoria or from New South Wales to Western Australia, long-distance relocations demand more than just packing up and heading out. With different state regulations, long travel distances, coordination issues and the need to protect your belongings, it’s easy for things to go awry without proper planning.

According to Muval, interstate and long-distance moves account for 45% of the Australian removalist industry’s income each year. This guide dives into the most common challenges Australians face when relocating across state lines. More importantly, it provides realistic solutions to tackle these issues head-on. Whether you’re a first-time mover or a seasoned relocator, being aware of these pain points and knowing how to address them will make your move far more manageable.

1. Research State-Specific Regulations

Each Australian state has its own regulations regarding what can and cannot be transported across borders. For example, Western Australia and Tasmania are particularly strict about biosecurity, with restrictions on items like fresh fruit, soil, garden equipment and even wooden furniture. Failing to comply can lead to fines, delays or even confiscation of goods at checkpoints.

It’s essential to consult each state’s government website to see what applies to your move. This is especially important if you’re bringing pets, plants or vehicles. In some cases, you may be required to clean items thoroughly or present documentation certifying that items are pest-free.

2. Secure Necessary Permits and Licences

Beyond biosecurity laws, large or unusual items—like boats, caravans or machinery—may require special permits. Oversized loads sometimes need a pilot vehicle and pre-approved routes. Additionally, if you’re moving a vehicle, you’ll need to handle registration transfers and safety certificates that vary by state.

Professional interstate removalists are often well-versed in these regulations. Hiring one not only ensures compliance but can also save you time and hassle. They usually have systems in place for declaring goods, filing paperwork and communicating with local authorities.

3. Ensure Adequate Insurance Coverage

A long-distance move significantly increases the risk of damage or loss to your belongings. Most removalist companies include basic insurance, but this might not cover high-value or fragile items. It’s advisable to explore comprehensive transit insurance, which often includes provisions for accidents, weather damage and theft.

Be sure to take inventory of your items, photographing valuable pieces and keeping receipts or appraisals. This makes filing claims easier if anything goes wrong during the journey.

4. Plan Move-Out and Move-In Dates Carefully

One of the biggest challenges of an interstate move is timing—especially when selling one property and purchasing or renting another in a different state. Misaligned move-out and move-in dates can lead to the need for temporary storage or short-term accommodation, which adds stress and cost.

Ideally, aim for a buffer of a few days between departure and arrival. This gives the removalist time to deliver your items without rushing and gives you breathing room in case of road delays or personal emergencies. If you’re moving with kids or pets, extra planning ensures a smoother transition for them too.

5. Choose a Reputable Interstate Removalist

Your choice of removalist can make or break your move. Look for companies with solid reviews, strong customer service and experience handling interstate relocations. The best removalists offer in-home assessments, provide itemised quotes and clearly explain their processes for packing, transport and unloading.

Check if they belong to professional associations, which usually require companies to adhere to quality and safety standards. Also, ask about tracking systems—some advanced removalists allow you to track your belongings en route, providing peace of mind throughout the journey.

6. Develop a Comprehensive Moving Checklist

To avoid last-minute chaos, create a checklist that spans several weeks or months. Early tasks might include notifying your landlord, booking a removalist or enrolling your children in a new school. Closer to the move, you’ll need to arrange utility disconnections, pack essential items and prepare for the physical move.

Digital tools like moving apps or spreadsheets can help you stay organised. Breaking tasks down by week makes the process manageable and helps reduce the likelihood of oversights.

7. Declutter Before Packing

Moving is a perfect opportunity to reassess what you really need. The fewer items you move, the cheaper and easier your interstate relocation becomes. Start by sorting your belongings into categories: keep, donate, sell or dispose.

Be ruthless—if you haven’t used something in a year, it might be time to let it go. Selling furniture, clothes or electronics online can offset some of your moving costs. Donations to charities or shelters can also make your decluttering effort more meaningful.

8. Use Appropriate Packing Materials

Long-distance transit involves extensive handling, bumps and shifting. Fragile items must be packed securely using bubble wrap, foam inserts or moving blankets. For electronics, original packaging is best. Label each box clearly with its contents, destination room and whether it contains breakables.

Packing should follow a logical order—start with non-essentials, like seasonal clothes or decorations, and end with everyday items. Keep an “open first” box with essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers and important documents.

9. Consider Storage Solutions

There are times when you may not be able to move everything at once—especially if you’re downsizing or waiting on your new home to be ready. In such cases, short-term storage offers a practical solution.

Look for removalist companies that offer secure, climate-controlled storage units. Bundling storage with your moving package can often reduce costs and simplify logistics, as one company will manage both storage and delivery.

10. Obtain Detailed Quotes

Price is always a concern, especially when moving interstate. To get the best deal, seek multiple quotes from different removalist companies. Make sure each quote is based on an in-home or virtual inspection of your belongings, not just a verbal description.

Ask for a breakdown of all charges—packing materials, labour, distance, fuel, insurance and any additional fees. Some companies offer flat-rate pricing, while others bill by weight or volume. Knowing what’s included helps you compare options fairly and avoid surprise costs.

11. Explore Cost-Saving Opportunities

While you shouldn’t sacrifice quality for price, there are smart ways to keep costs down. Moving during the off-season (typically winter) or on weekdays can be significantly cheaper. You might also save money by packing non-fragile items yourself or borrowing boxes from friends or local businesses.

Another cost-saving tip is to coordinate your move with someone heading in the opposite direction. Some removalists offer “backloading” services, where you only pay for the space your items occupy on a truck already scheduled to return empty.

12. Understand Payment Options

Every removalist handles payments differently. Some require full payment upfront, while others accept deposits followed by a final settlement after delivery. Clarify these terms early on, and ask about any cancellation or rescheduling fees.

Also, enquire whether they accept credit card payments, which can offer additional consumer protections. If needed, explore financing options—but be sure to read the fine print to avoid high-interest traps.
